A step by step protocol for the restoration of single or multiple implants with porcelain/metal crowns.
Step one remove healing abutments |
Tap in plastic impression posts. These must be tapped firmly and shouldn't come out in the impression |
The impression is poured in stone with the implant analogues in place and "soft-tissue" This model is then mounted against the opposing arch model using an appropriate jaw registration material |
Lab technician chooses appropriate abutments. These abutments are now shaped for occlusal clearance and cervical margin form. |
The technician can now provide you with the abutment, trimmed. The provisional crown (optional) and a coping to be picked up in a new impression. THIS COPING IS THE FINISHED METALWORK FOR THE FINAL CROWN. |
These copings are made in pattern resin directly on the prepared abutments. Casting them into metal is easy. The finished margins are extremely good. |
The metal crown core is made by casting the resin pattern. |
The fit of the metal coping should be the 'fit' of the final crown. |
Abutment taken to the mouth and positioned using the provisional restoration or a jig. This is not so critical for one single unit but becomes more so with multiple units or bridgework. |
Abutments in place |
These abutments have been aligned using the three splinted, provisional crowns as an alignment jig |
Metal coping seated onto abutment. Remember this is the "crown". An impression is now taken and the coping is picked up. |
The impression is then poured after the copings have been filled with pattern resin and "soft tissue" has been applied. This model is used to build up the porcelain to full contour, contacts and occlusion. |

This is how we started. Failing teeth in the upper right |
Failing teeth on the left side |
These five implants were placed with a combination of orthodox and internal sinus lift techniques. 90 minutes |
Radiograph of completed left side. The restorative phase was 3 appointments of 30 minutes each. |
Completed left side. Thanks to Paul Anson and others at Benchmark in Stourport for their careful technical work. |
